You can pretend — a reminder to myself

I can adapt, you know

I adapted to the smiles of my lovers

I adapted to my parents’ rules

I adapted to society’s standards

I adapted to new lives in unexplored countries

If you try to put me in a box, sure, I’ll go in

I’ll take the shape you want of me

I’ll take note of your requests

But I’ll sneak out during the night

I’ll take all the space I need

I’ll drink your fancy wine, gorge myself with your favorite dishes

I’ll laugh at your back

Because I’ll take from you and give what you want of me

But I’ll give myself so much more, more than you can imagine

I’ll fly away when you’re not looking

I’ll come back at dawn to fulfill my duties

My body can adapt wherever it needs to go, you know

But my mind can only adapt to freedom

If you look for my dreams, they are always in the same place:

Plotting to destroy your box
